What a special New Moon!  In Scorpio, with Mercury cazimi, opposing Uranus, who’s just retrograded back into Taurus.

Scorpio digs for the truth, and asks us to cultivate the courage and compassion needed to face it squarely, no matter how that face appears. Scorpio is passionate, complex, and honors the genuine act of becoming vulnerable in moments of intimacy.  Not hiding when we feel the urge to squirm out of someone’s penetrating gaze, or when we dare to look into our own soul.

It asks us to stand naked (literally or metaphorically) in front of the mirror, or in front of a trusted soul-mate, and stand to see and be seen.  No costumes, masks, or posturing, Scorpio honors what is absolutely and ultimately true, whether or not it's nice. It’s by refusing to live in denial, but rather in-fusing ourselves with all of our hidden and forgotten parts, that we become whole.  That wholeness is the ultimate wisdom of Scorpio.  It embraces the dark, knowing that without it there is no light.

Opposite this New Moon, Uranus has just retrograded back into the sign of Taurus.  Think back to the end of June, and beginning of July, when Uranus was last at this place in space. What themes do you recall from that time?  We’re going back to that for a more thorough investigation and ultimately completion. Uranus will remain on the 29th degree of Taurus until early January, when it moves into Aries.

Uranus, the change bringer, likes to shake things up.  Taurus is Earth, it's our foundation.  If you’ve ever been in an Earthquake, you’ll understand that uncanny feeling when the ground moves underneath your feet.  The Earth is our constant, we aren’t used to feeling it shift. For the Earth to move means our very foundation has shaken.   The last time that happened to me, my instinct was to focus on my personal center. The unshakable place inside. Stillness, peace, security.

The aim of Taurus is to cultivate and occupy that place within ourselves.

This coming lunar cycle may involve themes of our foundations being shaken.  We have the opportunity to strengthen our center, and to orient by our internal, instinctual compass.

As Mercury’s cazimi (union with the Sun) takes place with the New Moon, its symbolism is a theme that is with us for the entire Lunar cycle. (remember New Moons are the birth chart for the whole lunar month)  This is a day of enlightenment… that’s a lofty word. Think of it as being filled with light… just as Mercury is on this day as it connects with the Sun.  Mercury is our Mind, our perceptive capacities. Our perception is filled with light.  Wisdom. Solar truth.  Life.

This is the “ah-ha”, a missing puzzle piece revealed.  The perspective shift that comes from having the earth shake underneath our feet, and thus finding our center… our priorities. Can you imagine any other outcome other than deep presence and gratitude?   I can’t… or don’t want to.  I think this is the ultimate gift of this time.  Deep, deep, reverence and gratitude for Life.  For the opportunity to Live.

This is an important chapter in the marathon Walz of Saturn and Neptune. Dance partners in the Cosmic ballroom, these two see us now in a season of unraveling and surrender.  We don’t know what’s ahead, but this time is preparing us for it.  Uranus says, don’t fall asleep!  “Awaken!”

Awaken in Gratitude.

I want to also take a moment to acknowledge that Hawaii is now celebrating Makahiki, the Hawaiian New Year.  This is the time of Lono, a time of  celebration, games, feasts, replenishment, and abundance.  It's the time of rain, and the time of peace. That’s a lot to be grateful for!

So, during this upcoming Lunar cycle, which carries us into the darkest time of year, and the darkest recesses of our own souls and psyches, let’s remember that the darkness is the great incubator of Life, and by embracing it, we gain wholeness.

Cheers!  Hau’oli Makahiki Hou!  Happy Hawaiian New Year! And Happy New Moon in Scorpio!
