Musings On... the New Moon in Virgo

Self-awareness. That’s a phrase I don’t often hear regarding Virgo.  “Perfectionist”, I hear plenty!  

“The analyst”, that’s another.  Perhaps the most lovely is “craftsperson”.  We think of our dear Virgo friends as hard working, humble, neat, organized, practical, responsible, dependable, helpful.  These are usually true. And a high aim of Virgo is to find work that calls to our soul.  Work that offers a service to the world. Our process of learning certain skills or “crafts” that are useful to others pertains to this sign. 

This is an excellent time for taking a new look at the work we're doing. Are the partnerships we have surrounding work healthy? Do the dynamics need to be adjusted? Is our work feeding our soul as we invest our creativity into it? Are there any default belief systems we've been perpetuating that hinder our progress? It's time to move beyond them.

A New Moon in Virgo is an excellent time to dedicate ourselves to our updated dreams and work endeavors, setting realistic goals and working to attain them.

Because of Virgo’s scrupulous attention to detail, and deep desire to improve, this sign has all the tools for honest reflection.  Pointed inward, the tendency can be to see the ideal version of who we want to be, vs. who we actually are today.  Recognizing the gap between reality and potential can be humbling and hard. 

Unconditional self-acceptance and love is medicine for the part of our charts, or the part of each of us, that contains Virgo energy.  We are all imperfect works in progress, and it’s wise to remember that perfection (which is actually unattainable) is not the goal;  improvement is. Have you heard people say, “it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey”?  In this case, it’s the work and learning we do on the way that makes us into who we are. 

The Virgo New Moon is in a lovely sextile to Mars in Cancer.  We’re going to have direct access to some really big feelings, and the opportunity to be brave, and heal. 

Right before this New Moon, Venus moves into Scorpio, and Mercury into Libra. Let’s take a closer look at this.  Mercury rules Virgo, so we want to pay special attention here.  Libra is the sign of relationships, equinimity, beauty, and balance.  We could say that our relationships are coming into focus now.  Venus (ruler of Libra) disposits ( influences) Mercury in this chart.

What’s Venus up to?  She’s just ingressed into Scorpio, where she’ll station retrograde October 2nd (HST). This is about digging the muck out of our relationships, so that they can thrive based on what’s actually true.  This might be messy. Notice Venus in a square with Pluto in Aquarius?  We’re being called to transform something within ourselves regarding  the way we do relationships, so that we bring more of our updated, authentic selves into the dynamic.

Venus also relates to our values. We'll be taking a look at what matters to us the most, and where those beliefs came from. It will be a great opportunity to review, and update if needed, the values that shape our path forward.

The Pluto r, Uranus r, Neptune r triangle supports new perspective and positive change. So does the Grand Trine  between Mercury, Pluto, and Uranus. 

Another clue: Neptune retrograde in Aries opposing Mercury in Libra is asking us to take a new, and higher approach, to gain perspective on how we do relationships, and to see where we may be off balance so we can adjust.

Looking at the sabian symbols for the Moon’s nodes, 28° Leo is about “a mermaid waiting for her prince”.  Because we’re talking about the South Node here, we’ll use a “negative” perspective.  In other words… how does this symbol describe what needs to be recognized and changed?  In this case,  it’s about noticing when we have a need for relationships in order to feel complete. It may also pertain to an attitude of waiting for life to take care of things, rather than taking responsibility for ourselves.

In contrast, the North Node is at 28° Aquarius.  The sabian symbol for this degree is about a butterfly emerging. Remember… in the effort to emerge, a butterfly has to 

s q u e e e e z  e  its way out of the chrysalis. The squeeze is a struggle.  The purpose of it is to effectively wring liquid out of the wings, so that they’ll be flight ready. 

If you ever see a butterfly struggling to get out of the chrysalis, please do not help.  The butterfly may never fly if you do.  Likewise, when we try to save our loved ones from struggle, we aren’t giving them the chance to get their wings prepared for flight.  See?  We might think we're helping, but we're not.

Through the lens of Virgo, there's a fine line between "helping" and self-sacrifice, which quickly turns to martyrdom… a Virgo shadow.  I imagine sometimes most of us play one part or another at different times... either rescuing or needing to be rescued. It's time to take responsibilty for our own lives, however. It's time to co-create our reality with the Divine.

This also pertains to the challenges we face in our own lives. A dear friend likes to remind me, "Life isn't happening to you, it's happening for you". Life may be giving us challenges to wring the liquid out of our wings so that we can learn to fly. Purpose in the struggle.

It’s time to focus on our own emergence.  To get our own wings flight ready. Ugg…. It's harrrrd. Thankfully, the New Moon in Virgo reminds us that with humility, hard work, honest self-assessment, and unconditional self-acceptance and love, we are up for the task! We can grow and improve our lives. We can focus on the work that feels meaningful, and dedicate ourselves to it anew.

Let's focus on planting seeds for who we are becoming, and what we long to contribute to the world.

Cheers to the work of emergence, of soul evolution made possible when we can see ourselves honestly and with love. It begins within.
