I hope you had a beautiful Solstice!
I spent that day in a land where the Sun almost never sets. It really was the longest day ever! Incredible.
Technically we’ve just crossed the tipping point, and the light will gradually begin to wane, yet still the days are filled with much light.
Summer solstice is marked by the Sun’s ingress into the sign of Cancer. In just a few days Luna will join the Sun and we’ll have a New Moon in Cancer. This is a really interesting chart , so let’s start with the fundamentals.
Cancer season is an invitation to reconnect with our hearts. By that I mean the deep, tender place inside where we ‘feel’ life. This is a time of heightened emotion and the Astrology depicts this in several ways. First, the Moon, celestial symbol of our capacity to feel, is out of bounds (OOB). An OOB planet is one that is outside the reach of the Sun’s jurisdiction (celestial latitude) that means it no longer has to play by the boss’s rules. It’s gone rogue, and as a result it’s natural effects are amplified. An OOB Moon means BIG feelings.
Additionally, Jupiter in Cancer ♋️ is conjunct this New Moon. Many would consider this a good omen, and I agree. Jupiter brings generous opportunities to those paying attention. Jupiter is popular for bringing joy and abundance. (More on this in a moment) Jupiter also tends to magnify whatever it touches. It’s like giving a mouse a 📣 megaphone.
Now I’ll add one more detail. Mercury, the planet of perception, is in the “critical” (that means last) degrees of Cancer. The final degrees of any sign crystallize and strengthen its energy. So our perception is super-tuned to Cancer (emotional) frequencies.
This chart, in many ways, is pointing towards the feelings and emotions that are stored in our hearts.
Cancer also relates to home, family, sanctuary, belonging, and healing. It is The Great Mother. Mama bear. 🐻 The one who nurture and heals.
So while our inner, most tender places are shouting for attention, so too is the great protector in each of us, being activated.
A word on this… in our modern culture martyrdom is glorified, and self-care often labeled negatively as “self-indulgence”. Cancer teaches us that we cannot help others to heal if we haven’t first helped ourselves to heal. So, please, be “self-indulgent” now. Indulge the feelings and emotions that surface at this time. Allow them to guide you to your depths.
Jupiter is promising opportunity for healing, for connection, and a fuller, more open heart, if we’re willing to stick with ourselves.
Let’s follow this thread further. Sometimes the person whom it is most difficult to have compassion for is ourselves. If we can care for ourselves with the same grace that we bestow upon those we love, we increase the capacity of our hearts to hold goodwill for humanity and the world. This is ultimately what Cancer is all about. Connection. Hearing. Belonging together.
With the New Moon in a precise sextile to Mars in ♍️ Virgo, there are two things I feel this chart is calling for. Gentleness (Cancer), and persistence (Mars in Virgo). Mars in Virgo wants us to passionately work at making things better… mundane detail by mundane detail. Positive change is the outcome of persistent work on a daily basis. Virgo observes the ways in which things can be made better, and its aim is to use its skills in service of the greater good.
And so the deep soul growth we aspire to , as well as the changes that can recondition society at large, comes through commitment to healing ourselves and our world one day at a time. Gently, and persistently.
We’ve recently experienced Jupiter square Saturn. Tension between opportunity and limitations. Saturn, still conjunct Neptune, is challenging us to see clearly as we dream big. Whatever shifts, whatever changes we’ve been feeling on our horizons, whatever challenges and opportunities we are working through and towards, have required effort. This New Moon offers rest and reprieve. An chance to process our emotions so that we can move forward. Comfort, kindness, and connection are what’s needed now.
Happy New Moon in Cancer!
